When I got the job in Providence, I have to admit that I didn’t know about the size and scope of the Latin population and its influence on daily life in the Ocean State.
OK, let me admit, I thought Rhode Island, like the rest of New England, was void of people like me. I was so wrong and I own that mistake.
I was wonderfully surprised to see that Rhode Island is very Latin (I still want to find a place that sells a great Cuban coffee in any of the three forms you should consume Cuban coffee: Cafecito, Colada, Cortadito.)
This exhibit is beautiful and, for me especially, it’s very educational. As a relatively new Rhode Islander (now going on three years) I needed this exhibit to learn more about my new home.
The artist is Rene Gomez who uses Pointillism to create these bright portraits. The exhibit is put on by Rhode Island Latino Arts. I met with Marta Martinez recently to learn more about the exhibit. (A note, I spoke with her about Hispanic Heritage Month for this piece.)
